Here is a bunch of extra stuff you might like to see about Synchrony, from concept sketches to trivia! :D Warning, some things refer to stuff later on in the story, so you should probably read the whole story before coming here if you don't want any spoilers.
This here is an ad we created to hand out to classmates when we presented a preview version for them in class.
The images come from a few of the illustrations. The font for the title is Bookman Old Style, the subtitle is
Monotype Corvisa, and the names are in Vivaldi.
These are concept sketches that were the basis of the illustrations that we used. You can see little stick figure
versions of what would be the illustrations, plus some stuff that wasn't. Some spoilers here, but only implicit ones.

Trivia (warning, may contain a few spoilers for the story):
- Although Drew and Heather are of Caucasian descent at least for the most part, Phillip is Asian and Anastasia is Russian. Strufis is blonde as stated in the story, and has hazel eyes, but his ethnicity doesn’t exactly translate to something recognizable in this world. Drew has dark brown hair and brown eyes, Heather has red-brown hair and light blue eyes (she has some Irish heritage, interestingly), Anastasia has brown hair and green eyes, and Phillip, being Asian, has black hair and brown eyes. In addition, all of them except for Anastasia (who's a senior) are juniors in high school.
- There actually is a window at Monta Vista that looks into the back of the chemistry classrooms, near where the chemicals are kept. It’s right before you enter the D building bathrooms. Although it’s not known if that’s really how she knows what the back room looks like.
- The elevator floor and room at the Tripletree Hotel (reference to its two tree counterpart in our world) are references to numbers significant to the authors. These were the atomic numbers of our rolecall elements from Chemistry Honors:
14 = Alvin’s element (Silicon) from Gupta’s 7th period class
33 = Jessica’s element (Arsenic) from Gupta’s 6th period class
- The Atono River is a spinoff of the Sacramento River, by playing on a synonym of “sacrament”, which is “atonement”.
- The three bigwigs of the different sides (the government, the scientists, and the Naturals) have references to the Big Three of WWII fame in their names: Mr. Winston Templehill is analogous to Winston Churchill, Professor Roosevelt Enstrite is to his first name’s counterpart, and Captain Khinterlin refers to Stalin (which means “man of steel”, while Khinterlin is instead “man of the woods”). The personalities are quite different from their referenced people however.
- Mr. Brambleton is a reference to a certain Chemistry AP teacher. Hopefully you can figure out by now who. :P As for Mrs. Lau and Mr. Plazad, they are vague references to school faculty (the former if only for the Asian background).
- The signal that Strufis gives to the rest of the group doesn’t have particular significance, but it’s the same that Strufis gives in the goofy picture of them on the main page, and it seems to have some kind of significance in his world that doesn’t quite translate to ours (for once).
- As for the various places they come across in their dimensional roulette, the first two are very obscure references to two stories Jessica has written. The first with the thigh-high grass is the setting for the picture book “A Magical Friendship” that follows two young girls and their guardian fairies first meeting and becoming friends. The second with the hill and the hazy sky is from the story “The Highest Hill” where three boys climb to the top of a hill and learn more about each other in the process. The third is a reference to the Japanese anime “Fullmetal Alchemist” (somewhat of a spoiler to explain the entire thing, it refers to a very important scene in the show). The consequent two are named specifically (Mario Land, a hopefully recognizable video game setting, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which is a classic Steven Spielburg movie).
