2026年前、地表（現在の魔界）で勃発。
当時、世界には主に六つの大国とその他の小国が存在していた。
そのうちの極点近くにある一国が、譜術研究の際七番目の音素「第七音素（セブンスフォニム）」を発見したのが、この戦争のきっかけである。
この音素が、星の誕生から消滅に至る全ての記憶を有していると確定されたことで、第七音素は政治的に利用されることになる。
そして、第七音素観測と測定に適している「極点」をめぐり争いが勃発した。

この戦争は開戦から約１ヶ月で人類の約半数を消滅させ、大規模な地殻変動を引き起こしてしまう。
人々は絶望に包まれ、第七音素による未来視派と否定派に分裂。
オールドラント全土での局地戦へと進んだ。
十年に及ぶ戦乱の末期にユリア・ジュエという天才譜術士が登場し、戦争は終結することとなる。

譜術戦争（フォニック・ウォー）によって障気に包まれ、壊滅的に汚染された地表から逃れるべくまだ汚染されていなかった大陸を、譜術によって引きはがす計画が実行された。
高度約三万メートルのところに浮遊させた大地を、魔界では「外殻大地」と呼ぶことになる。
外殻大地は、地表のセフィロトから人為的に吹き上げさせている記憶粒子（セルパーティクル）によって支えられ浮遊。
セフィロトは音素力（フォンパワー）による制御装置「パッセージリング」で制御を行っている。

大陸が記憶粒子（セルパーティクル）によって押し上げられた後も、ユリアの残した預言（スコア）に基づいて魔界（クリフォト）に唯一の街が残された。
外殻の人間たちから忘れられた場所で、ローレライ教団の一部の教団員達が人類を破滅から救い、繁栄に導くために世界を監視することを務めとした。
これがユリアシティである。

The Truth of the Fonic War
The Fonic War broke out 2026 years ago in what is now the Qliphoth. At the time, the world was divided into six major powers and many smaller states. The war began as a result of the discovery of the Seventh Fonon by one country, located near the pole. When it was determined that the Seventh Fonon held the memories of the planet from its formation to its destruction, the fonon was immediately seized upon as a political tool, and conflict broke out over the technology for observing and measuring this new fonon.

The conflict quickly swelled into full-scale war, and within a month, half of the human population had been destroyed, with great changes wreaked upon the landscape. An end to the war was finally brought about by the appearance of a highly-gifted fonist named Yulia Jue.

In order to escape from a land devastated and covered in miasma by the Fonic War, a plan was laid to use fonic artes to separate the unaffected parts of the planet's crust and raise them to a height of 30,000 meters. The plan was successfully executed, and the newly-created shell became known as the "Outer Lands".
The Outer Lands were supported by a stream of memory particles artificially extracted through the planet's Sephiroth, which in turn were controlled by devices known as "passage rings", using fon power.

Even after the land was raised by the streams of memory particles, one city remained in the Qliphoth, following the Score left by Yulia. In this city, long forgotten by those on the Outer Lands, a select few Order of Lorelei members continued to watch over the rest of humanity, to save it from destruction.
That city is called Yulia City.
